Communication, social interaction, and play and behaviour check list In early infancy, was the child "as good as gold" or extremely fractious, or "average"? Was the child a baby who liked to snuggle in or were they not keen on being held? Did you have any concerns about the ages that the child learnt to sit, crawl, or walk? When sitting, would the child look up at you and raise their arms to be picked up? When you were sitting on the settee, would the child crawl over to you and try to climb up your legs onto your lap? Would the child point at objects and then look at you to attract your attention to them? Would the child follow your pointing when you pointed at objects? How would the child get the message across if they wanted something? How does the child get the message across now? If the child led you by the hand, did they usually look from you to the object and back again, or did they use your hand as a tool to get objects usually without much eye contact? Did the child have tuneful "conversation" with you even when it was unintelligible? By 18 months or so, did the child take an interest in strangers and other children? By 18 months or so, did the child enjoy approaches from other adults? Did the child enjoy tickles and playing "peep-po"? Did the child anticipate tickles and physical play? Does the child give kisses, hugs, and affection on request or only on their terms? If the child was playing and you got alongside them, would they let you join in? If not, how would they respond? Would the child bring you a book or toy and indicate that they wanted you to read it to them or play with it with them? If you got one of their toys and invited them to join you with it, would they do so? If I visited the house would the child get upset by my presence or come and hide by you, or would they ignore me? If other children visit the house does the child play with them or let them play with his or her toys, or do they ignore them or move away? Does the child have pretend play with their siblings? Does the child like indoor soft play areas? Does the child make a little friend or is their play solitary? When the child is at indoor soft play areas do they make a friend and run round with them or play with them, or is the child alone? Does the child sniff or lick objects or people? Did the child play with toys (cars, cups of tea) appropriately? Did the child give a running commentary when they were playing with toys? Did the child have imaginative play with the cars, or is it repetitive or limited, or do they repeat scenes from videos? Does the child have any favourite videos that they watch repeatedly? Does the child have any favourite clothes that they always insist on wearing? Does the child carry a particular toy or object around with them? Does the child have certain routines or are there routines that you have to follow for a quiet life? If you go to or from the shops or school by a different route, does the child get upset? What is the child like in new places? What is the child like with new people? In books with pictures of food will the child pretend to eat the food? (This suggests the child understands that the image represents an object and demonstrates that understanding by "use" of the object.) If you hold your hand out and say "can I have the (item of food)"? Will the child pretend to pass it to you from the picture? If you pretend to take the item of food from the picture and give it to them will the child take it and pretend to eat it? Does a particular aspect of a toy or object (the wheels of a toy car) overly fascinate them? Do bright or shiny objects, or lights or shadows overly fascinate the child? Does a part of a person (earrings, necklace) rather than the person's face overly fascinate the child? Is the child frightened or upset by particular noises that are not necessarily loud (such as the vacuum cleaner or washing machine), or by particular objects for no apparent reason? Does the child get upset by certain clothes or the labels on their clothes?
