Caused by Varicella Zoster
Shingles is reactivation
Highly infectious - spread resp, can be caught from shingles, from 4/7 pre rash to 5/7 post 1st appeared, incubation 10-21/7
Clinical features (more severe if older), fever, itchy rash usually starts on head/ trunk, macular then papular then vesicular, mild systemic upset
Mx - supportive - keep cool, trim nails, calamine
If immunocompromised/newborns give Ig and Acyclovir if rash develops
school exclusion until 5/7 after rash appears

Complications
Pneumonia
Bacterial infection of lesions
Encephalitis
Disseminated haemorrhagic
Arthritis, Nephritis, Pancreatitis
